According to a report on Friday, a gym teacher in Virginia has been placed on leave after he refused to use the preferred pronouns of the transgender students or the ones with unspecified gender.
He refused to do so because of his professed Christian belief system.
During a meeting on Tuesday about “Rights of Transgender and Gender-Expansive Students” conducted by Loudoun County Public School, the gym teacher Byron Tanner Cross spoke out in opposition to the use of the preferred personal pronouns.
In a video, The Leesburg Elementary School gym instructor said, “My name is Tanner Cross, and I am speaking out of love for those who are suffering from gender dysphoria“.
During his statement, he also gave reference to a TV program that is based on teenagers who carry out detransitioning after claiming to have railroaded into their decisions.
Cross said, “I love all of my students, but I will never lie to them regardless of the consequences“.
He stated that “I’m a teacher, but I serve God first, and I will not affirm that a biological boy can be a girl and vice versa because it’s against my religion”, he further said that “It’s lying to a child, it’s abuse to a child, and it’s sinning against our God”.
As per the sources, Loudoun Times-Mirror has been notified by the Loudoun County Public Schools that Cross has been placed on paid leave for a particular time period. The parents have also been made aware of this decision taken against the instructor.
The principal of Leesburg Elementary, Shawn Lady, has penned about the incident and has said that “Because this involves a personnel matter, I can offer no further information”.
The draft policy in the district of the schools regarding the gender-expansive and transgender students explains that “LCPS staff shall allow gender-expansive or transgender students to use their chosen name and gender pronouns that reflect their gender identity without any substantiating evidence.”
On Friday, Angela Cross, who is the wife of the gym instructor, wrote on Facebook that the main reason why her husband has been placed on leave is “speaking out” against something.
She used Facebook for that purpose and wrote, “As Americans, we believe that every American has the right to their beliefs, but NO AMERICAN HAS THE RIGHT TO IMPOSE THEIR BELIEFS ON OTHERS.“
In addition to this, she further stated that “We spoke out first and foremost to protect the children and also to defend the first amendment rights of teachers and staff”.
Moreover, she said, “In answer to the many questions of what you can do to help, first please stand with us in truth and with love on God’s word”.
It has been noticed recently that most of the companies and educational institutions have become more sensitive towards the use of preferred pronouns of people in order to develop an inclusive environment and give proper respect instead of making use of those pronouns that are not how most of the people would want to be known.
As a consequence, this has involved inquiring regarding the pronouns of people and taking steps and measures to identify them in the right manner.
This will help them feel good rather than feeling disrespected, isolated, alienated, or disregarded.
