The male teachers have gained attention and support for their campaign “Clothing Has No Gender.”
In Spain, male teachers have been posting their images on social media wearing skirts in class. They have done it in order to oppose the negative stereotypes regarding gender in their country. They have made efforts to promote and encourage diversity in the classroom.
Numerous teachers throughout Spain supported their campaign “Clothing Has No Gender” – promoted in Spanish by the hashtag #laropanotienegenero –by wearing the article of clothing to their respective classrooms. They have done it after a male student was expelled last year due to the reason that he was wearing a skirt.
The two instructors Borja Velazquez, 36, and Manuel Ortega, 37, of San Esteban, Valladolid, have gained a lot of popularity and attention after wearing skirts to class.
The incident of a student who was bullied for wearing an anime shirt inspired and motivated the instructors to take this action and support the students. The instructor, Manuel, was shocked after the boy changed his attire or outfit and decided to wear skirts throughout the month of May.
“A school that educates with respect, diversity, co-education, and tolerance,” Manuel wrote on Twitter. “Dress how you want! We join the campaign #clotheshavenogender.”
In addition to this, another teacher Jose Piñas, in the previous year was also seen wearing skirts to the school. He dad that as he confronted anti-gay bigotry when he was in his youth.
The teacher was inspired to wear the skirt in order to show support to the 15 years old student Mikel Gómes. He lives in Basque Country. Mikel was removed from the class after he wore a skirt there. He was also sent to a psychologist for that purpose. Later on, he shared the incident on TikTok, which further motivated and encouraged myriad boys of Spain to wear skirts to their classrooms and break the gender norms.
Tweeting a photo of himself in a skirt, Piñas wrote: “20 years ago I suffered persecution and insults for my sexual orientation in the institute where I am now a teacher.”
“Many teachers, they looked the other way,” he continued. “I want to join the cause of the student, Mikel, who has been expelled and sent to the psychologist for going to class with a skirt.”
The parents have also been seen encouraging and supporting this brave move by the teachers. They have expressed their views online and have also criticized the traditionally harsh environment of high school.
The critics and the social movements in recent times have highlighted that the cultural surroundings regarding dressing have constantly been fluctuating, in addition to the expectations of wearing clothes for men in one way and for women in another way. People need to check out the use of kilts in the past, a masculine article of clothing in the country of Scotland. In addition to this, they must also notice that the jeans were previously considered taboo for women prior to gaining popularity.
